Elmar Berkovich (Nl. 1897-1986)

Low table for Metz & Co. 1930s. Painted wood/ plywood and glass.

Elmar Berkovich was a leading furniture designer and interior designer in the Netherlands in the period 1925-1965. Before the Second World War he was employed by the Metz & Co company in Amsterdam, then at Philips in Eindhoven. In his interior assignments for large complexes such as factories, offices and hospitals, his attention was mainly focused on the ambiance, the lighting and the use of colour.

Be Niegeman-Brand (Dutch mid-c20th)

Cube stool – Circa early 1950s for Goed Wonen. 31.5 x 31.5 x 31.5cm

A very rare piece of children’s furniture in cube form. Designed by Be-Niegeman-Brand, the wife of the architect/designer Johan Niegeman (1902-77).

The cube stool was designed to be multi-functional and included a stool, a table and a toy.

Produced by the Dutch Goed Wonen (Good Living foundation, Amsterdam 1946-1968) whose aims were to “…bring living in the Netherlands to a higher level by improving the interior design in the broadest sense of the word, by promoting the production and distribution of furniture, upholstery, utensils, etc., which meet certain aesthetic, technical and social requirements.”

Alvar Aalto (Finland 1898-1976)

Early edition Finmar / Bowman Bros. dining set. Five model 611 stacking chairs and table. This was Aalto’s first modernist chair produced.

This set came from the home (wife) of Russian /American composer Dimitri Tiomkin best known for his western scores, including Duel in the Sun, Red River, High Noon, The Big Sky, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, and Last Train from Gun Hill.

The set was once black but has been restored and taken back to the wood colour.
